Arthur enlisted on 8th August 1914 and joined the 1st Bedfordshire Regiment, Regimental Number 4/6661, on 8th November 1914. He was sent to the Western Front, France and Flanders where on 19th April 1915 he was wounded in the cheek and mouth during the battle at Flubay, Neuve Chapelle. He was sent back to England to the Royal Netley Military Hospital to recuperate. On 4th January 1916 he transferred to the 3/5th Bedfordshire Regiment, Regimental Number 201160. Arthur survived and saw out the War in England.

Arthur died on 27th March 1940 at Stotfold, Bedfordshire.

Arthur was awarded the 1914 Star. The British War Medal and the Victory Medal 

He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

Arthur was the only son of William Jesse and Mary Anne (nee Morley) Crane, born in Ashwell, Hertfordshire in the 1st quarter of 1893. He was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell. Before enlisting he was a bricklayer’s labourer.

Arthur married Bertha Rose Dear in the 4th quarter 1920 in the Biggleswade District. They had two children, Ronald Arthur Frederick born on 5th September 1921 and Enid Clara born 18th October 1924.

Arthur died on 27th March 1940 at Stotfold, Bedfordshire.
