St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour
Bernard enlisted with the Royal Field Artillery Territorial Force on 1st November 1915, Regimental Number 895728. He was then taken into the main force Royal Field Artillery and aw active service in Egypt. He survived the War and died in Ashwell in 1st quarter 1963.
Bernard was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

Bernard was born at Ashwell, Hertfordshire on 18th July 1896, the only son of John and Rosina (nee Bryant) Hankin. He was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell. Before enlisting he was a clerk in the bottling department of a brewery.
Bernard married Grace Lilian Webb at Therfield, Hertfordshire on 2nd July 1921. They had three children, Bernard John born 1922, Ernest Arthur born 1925 and Peter David born 1935.
Bernard died in the first quarter 1963.
