Bruce enlisted at Hitchin, Hertfordshire on 4th September 1914 when he was only 17.  He served with the Bedfordshire Regiment, 1st Battalion 15th Brigade 5th Division in the Western European Theatre of War, France and Flanders. Bruce was a company stretcher bearer and was killed on 23rd October 1918 with two others when a shell hit their Aid Post

Bruce was awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal.

He is buried at Amerval Communal Cemetery Extension, Solesmes, France, and commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour and the Ashwell War Memorial.

Bruce was the third son of James and Elizabeth Ann (nee Harradine) Law of Mill Street, Ashwell.  He was a pupil of the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell and before enlisting he was a domestic gardener.

Back in the village for their final leave before going to the front were several recruits including Eric Hyder, Bruce Law, Stanley Bryant and Maurice Kirchin, who gave a graphic description of life in training camp at Felixstowe.
