Edward was a private in the 21st Battalion of the Manchester Regiment, regimental number 55043, and formerly with the Hertfordshire Yeomanry number 2778. He enlisted at Watford near his home in Letchmore Heath, Hertfordshire. He fought in the Western European Theatre of War, France and Flanders.  He died of wounds on 9th October 1918.

He was awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal.

Ted is commemorated on the Tincourt New British Cemetery, Tincourt-Boucly, Departement de la Somme, Picardie, France VII.A.21, and the Ashwell Village War Memorial.  He is also commemorated with his brother Stanley Beale Camp on a plaque above the door of 4 Lander Cottages, Letchmore Heath, Aldenham, Hertfordshire.

Ted was the elder son of Edward and Martha (nee Beale) Camp of Lander Cottages, Letchmore Heath, Hertfordshire. He was born in Letchmore Heath (Aldenham), Hertfordshire but the 1911 census shows him and his brother Stanley Beale Camp living in Ashwell with their mother’s brother, Isaac Beale.  At the time Ted was working as a poultry lad on a farm.  Ted’s mother Martha was born in Ashwell.

Ted’s brother Stanley Beale Camp was killed in action in France 18th May 1915.

Records of Soldier’s Effects show Elsie Mortimer as sole legatee.

 

 

Commentary:

The entry in Rolls of Honour/Hertfordshire/Aldenham that is attached to the commemorative plaque at 4 Lander Cottages, Letchmore Heath is incorrect.
