Charles Leopold enlisted with the 3/1st Reserve Hertfordshire Yeomanry division of the Household Cavalry on 20th November 1915, Regimental Number 2879. He and his uncle, Edward, signed up together at Hertford, Hertfordshire.  In June 1917 Charles and Edward were transferred to the 6th Reserve Battalion, Regimental Number 106045. On 27th November 1917 the Regiment embarked for the Asian Theatre of War, Mesopotamia and Persia where in March 1918 it saw active service in the Ramadi Battles. Charles survived the War and died on 8th January 1971.

Charles was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. 

He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

Charles was the eldest son of Charles and Agnes Ellen Maud (nee Howard) Day, born on 7th March 1897 at Ashwell, Hertfordshire. He was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell.

Charles married Hilda Muriel Bentley on 26th February 1924. They had three children, Howard E born 1924, and twins Mary H and Olive M born 1930. Hilda Muriel died in 1930.  Charles then married May Davis at Finsbury, London. It is not known if they had children.

Charles died on 8th January 1971.
