Clifford enlisted on 10th November 1915.  He served with the Army Medical Corps (6th Division) 16th Field Ambulance during the War, Regimental Number 82062. He saw active service on the Western Front in many of the Battles of the Somme. He survived the War and died aged 89 in May 1984.

Clifford was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

Clifford was the second of four sons of Henry and Anna (nee Ebsworth) Bonnett born on 9th July 1894 in Ashwell, Hertfordshire, and the 1911 census shows him still living in Ashwell, aged 16.  Henry was a tailor in Ashwell.

Clifford was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell.

He married Ellen Gladys Greenham in September 1920 at Harpenden, Hertfordshire and they had one son, Roy C G born 1 September 1920.

Clifford died in the Congleton district in May 1984 aged 89.

Clifford’s brother Harry also saw active service in WWI and survived..
