Harry enlisted with his brother on 5th January 1915 at Woolwich with the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, Regimental Number SE/2407. He was sent to the Western Front, France and Flanders almost immediately. He survived the War and died in the Biggleswade District, Bedfordshire in March 1971.

Harry was awarded the 1915 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

Harry was the eldest son of Thomas Priest Maddams and Kate Elizabeth (nee Cowley) Maddams, born at Brighton, Sussex on 14th May 1897. The 1891 census shows him a boarder at the Mead School in Shortmead Street, Biggleswade, Bedfordshire.  In 1901 he was a coachman in Senacre, Kent and in 1911 he was a cab driver in Saffron Waldon, Essex.

Harry married Edith Louisa Jellett in the 34d quarter 1902.  They had two sons, Sidney Lewis born in 1903 and Jack Edward born in 1908.

In the 1950s Harry and Edith moved to Biggleswade, Bedfordshire.

Harry died in the Biggleswade District, Bedfordshire in March 1971.

 

Harry’s brother Herbert George died in action on the Western Front, France and Flanders in 1917. His brother Charles Cowley served with the Royal Army Veterinary Corps and survived the war.
