Herbert George (Regimental Number 890489) and his friend Sidney Walter Worboys (Regimental Number 890488) enlisted together in September 1915 with the Royal Field Artillery, Territorial Force. They saw active service  in Gallipoli and in 1917 the 386th Battery 30th Brigade was in Mesopotamia where many of the soldiers died of disease.  Both Herbert and Sidney survived the war and Herbert died on 7 December 1968 in Ashwell, Hertfordshire.

Herbert was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. 

He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

Herbert George was born in Ashwell Hertfordshire in the first quarter of 1888, the eldest son of Herbert and Anna Maria (nee Reynolds) Clements.  He was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell.

The 1911 census shows him as a farm labourer.

Herbert married Mary Philomena Reynolds on 29th October 1921. They had two children, Mary Elizabeth and Herbert Christopher both born on 13 December 1923.

At the time of his death on 7th December 1968 Herbert was living at Buttway Cottages, Ashwell, Hertfordshire.

Two of Herbert’s brothers served in the War, Charles William and Harold Christopher, both survived.
