John enlisted on 28th December 1904 at Belfast, Northern Ireland and served with the Irish Guards, Regimental Number 2136, and was immediately shipped to London arriving on 31 December 1904. John served in the Western Europe Theatre of War, France and Flanders. He was wounded but survived the War.

On 4th September 1918, after several months in military hospital, John was discharged from the army being unfit for war service. It is not known when John died.

John was awarded the Victory Medal, the British War Medal, and the Silver War Badge.

He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

John was born in 1884 in Kircubbin, Northern Island to John Stratton and his wife.  He had three brothers Hugh, Peter and William.  Before enlisting his records show he was a carpenter.  He came to England in December 1904 with the Irish Guard and on the 1911 census he is shown in barracks in St George Hanover Square London. 

John married Daisy Sheldrick of Ashwell, Hertfordshire on 16th September 1915. It is not known if they had any children.

The 1911 census shows Daisy Sheldrick working as a cook with a family in Wimbledon, London where she met Jack. Daisy went to Buckingham Palace in 1927 when the Irish Guards were presented with their new Guidon (colours pennant). She was born in Ashwell the daughter of John and Martha (nee Scoot) Sheldrick in 1893.

It is not known when John died.
