Ernest enlisted with the Dorsetshire Regiment in Porchester, Dorset, Regimental number 17032, before being transferred to the Hampshire Regiment 2nd Battalion, Regimental number 29730.  He served in the Western European Theatre of War, France and Flanders and was killed in action on 13th October 1916.

Ernest was awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal.

He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Thiepval, Departement de la Somme, Picardie, France.

Ernest was the sixth son of George and Mary Ann (nee Shambrook) Sole of Ashwell. 

The 1911 census shows Ernest’s mother living in Poole, Dorset so, as King Ernest enlisted at Portchester, (Portsmouth) it is likely he moved with his mother to Dorset and by 1911 had enlisted already.
