Sidney enlisted in April 1917 with the Devonshire Regiment, 2nd Battalion, Regimental Number 74005. He transferred to the Wiltshire Regiment, 6th Battalion, Regimental Number 21616. Sidney saw active service on the Western Front, France and Flanders as both these regiments fought in the battles around The Somme and Ypres. He survived the war and returned to Ashwell.

Sidney was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

He died in 1980 and is commemorated on the St Mary's Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

Sidney was the sixth son of Benjamin and Esther (nee Huffer), born on 4th April 1899 in Ashwell, Hertfordshire.

He attended the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell.

He married Winifred Worboys in the first quarter of 1925.  It is not known if they had children.

Sidney’s brothers Arthur, Rupert and Percy all survived the war and returned to Ashwell. Rupert, the second son received a shrapnel wound to his arm and was awarded a wound stripe.  George, the third son, died in the Battle of the Somme on 13th November 1916. It is not known if Stanley survived the war.

 

 

Commentary: 

Royston Crow 28 June 1918 Mr & Mrs Bryant, Baldwin’s Corner, were informed son Pte Sidney Bryant missing – 2nd son missing.
