Swan Cottage

6 Gardiners Lane

Swan Cottage was built in or around 1860.  It is not delineated on the 1841 Tithe Map – only the row facing Workhouse Row appears, occupying 16 perches of land.

Swan Cottage has changed hands several times during its existence, never having been lived in by its owner until 1993 when a basket maker purchased it.

Its most well-known tenants were Albert and Alice Skerman (pictured here), who cultivated the garden with “borrowed” cuttings from around the village.

Originally called Swan Corner Cottage, it was completely renovated and had its appearance changed in 1986 by the then owner, Mouse Davies of Hitchin.

You can see the original doorstep on the roadside.

On the deeds it states that Swan Cottage is “of archaeological interest”.  I wonder why....?
